What are fascias and soffits?
The fascia is the board fixed to the ends of the rafters, running along the edge of the roof, and it is what the gutter is usually hung from. The soffit is the board underneath, closing the gap between the wall and the underside of the roof, and on many properties it includes ventilation to help air move through the loft.
Together they finish off the roofline and give the gutter something solid to attach to, so problems with one often affect the other.
Signs of a problem
Flaking or peeling paint on a timber fascia is an early sign that moisture is getting into the wood. Soft or spongy boards, visible gaps behind the fascia, or sections that look out of line with the rest of the run point to rot that has taken hold. Birds getting into the eaves is often a sign that a soffit has come loose or cracked.
Because the gutter is fixed to the fascia, a gutter that has started to sag or pull away from the wall is sometimes actually a sign of a fascia problem rather than a fault with the gutter itself.
Repair or replacement
Where the damage is limited to a short section, a repair can often be carried out using matching board. Where rot has spread along a longer run, or the boards are timber and showing their age throughout, full replacement with a low-maintenance material is usually the more practical option. We will look at the extent of the problem and explain which approach suits your property.
Because gutters depend on a sound fascia, this work is often considered alongside a gutter replacement, particularly where both have reached the end of their working life at the same time.
Material options
Timber fascias and soffits need regular painting to stay protected, while UPVC alternatives are generally chosen for lower upkeep. We can talk through how a UPVC board compares with timber for your property, and our uPVC cladding information explains a separate covering option, including support, joints and ventilation considerations.

Frequently asked questions
What are fascias and soffits?
The fascia is the board along the roof edge that the gutter is usually fixed to, and the soffit is the board underneath that closes the gap between the wall and the roof, often providing loft ventilation.
How can I tell if my fascia boards need attention?
Flaking paint, soft or spongy timber, visible gaps behind the board, and a gutter that has started to sag or pull away from the wall are all signs worth having looked at, and most can be seen from the ground.
Can fascia boards be repaired rather than replaced?
Where damage is limited to a short section, a repair using matching board is often possible. Where rot has spread along a longer run, replacement is usually the more practical choice.
Is UPVC better than timber for fascias and soffits?
UPVC generally needs less ongoing upkeep than timber, which has to be repainted regularly to stay protected. We can explain how each option suits your particular property.
Does fascia damage affect my gutters?
Yes, since gutters are usually fixed to the fascia board, a rotten or failing fascia can cause the gutter above it to sag or pull away from the wall.
