What counts as a repair
Repairs cover faults that are limited to one part of the system rather than the whole line. Re-sealing a leaking joint, refitting a bracket that has pulled away from the fascia, correcting the fall on a sagging section, and replacing a cracked length are all typical repair jobs.
The aim is to restore the gutter to proper working order using the existing run wherever it is still sound, rather than disturbing sections that are performing correctly.
Faults along joints, brackets and downpipes
Overflowing at a single point, rather than along the whole length, usually points to a blockage or a dip where the gutter has lost its fall. Staining on a wall below a joint is a sign of a seal that has failed. Brackets that have come loose let the gutter tilt, and once it tilts water starts to spill rather than flow to the downpipe.
Cast iron sections can crack with age or a knock, while plastic gutters can become brittle in strong sunlight and split at a joint. In each case the fix depends on the material and how the rest of the run is fixed.
A leaking downpipe joint is a different fault from an overflowing gutter. Note which connection drips and whether the pipe discharges freely. The inspection should follow the route of water rather than treating every damp mark as a fault in the horizontal gutter.
How a repair visit is approached
We start by looking at the whole run from ground level and from any safe vantage point, checking for the obvious signs mentioned above, before confirming the extent of the problem at closer range. Once the cause is identified, we explain what needs doing and why, so the decision between a repair and a wider repair or replacement is an informed one.
Where fascias behind the gutter are also showing signs of rot, we will mention this as part of the same visit, since a gutter can only be properly repaired if the board it is fixed to is sound. More on this is covered on our fascias and soffits page.
Fife, Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy
We carry out gutter repairs across Fife, including Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy and the surrounding towns and villages, working to the same standard wherever the job is.
When a repair is not enough
If a gutter has failed at several points along its length, or the material itself has become brittle throughout, patching one section after another stops being good value. In that situation replacing the run is usually the more sensible route, and we will say so plainly rather than carrying out repeated repairs on a system that is past its useful working life. Our guttering and fascia costs page explains how that decision is priced.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my gutter needs a repair or a full replacement?
If the fault is limited to one joint, bracket or section, a repair is usually appropriate. If several parts of the run are failing, or the gutter material has become brittle or cracked in multiple places, replacement tends to be the better value option, and we will advise honestly either way.
Can a repair be matched to my existing gutter?
In most cases a repair uses a section, joint or bracket that matches the existing gutter in material and profile, so the repaired length blends in with the rest of the run.
What signs suggest a gutter needs attention?
Water spilling over the front edge during rain, staining running down a wall below a joint, and a gutter that visibly dips or tilts are the clearest signs, all of which can usually be seen safely from the ground.
What matters when repairing an older cast iron gutter?
The profile, joint type, corrosion and available compatible fittings all affect whether a damaged section can be repaired. Confirm the proposed material and method before agreeing to work; do not assume a replacement fitting will match simply because its width looks similar.
Will you check the fascias while repairing the gutter?
We will take a look at the fascia boards the gutter is fixed to as part of the same visit, since a gutter repair is only lasting if the board behind it is sound.
